Tragedy has occurred in Calabar, Cross River State as flood has killed a pregnant woman, alongside her two children and four others in a residential building.The flood which occurred at Edim Otop axis of Calabar Municipal, swept through the community as a result of a torrential rainfall that lasted for about five hours.
At the scene of the incident, it was gathered that seven persons were found dead, including the pregnant women, her father in-law, two children and two squatters, while her husband and one of their children survived.
It was gathered that the flood uprooted a meligna tree and a palm-tree, sent them crashing into the building, and submerged the family, as well as their belongings.
The landlord of the affected building, Amos Akaniyene, who stood lamenting his losses, confirmed that his expectant wife, Ekaete Amos, 30; his two children, David and Deborah; mother in-law, Iquo Effiong; and two other relatives, Samuel and Anthony, were crushed by the trees and buried in the rubble of the collapsed building.
His neighbour, Akpan Ubong, said that the water uprooted trees in its path and sent them crashing.
Akpan further explained that his house was directly in the path of the flood which uprooted trees and killing occupants who had gone to bed.
It was a gory scene, as corpses of the victims littered the area, while sympathisers gathered to assist in evacuating some of their belongings.
Men of the Cross River State Fire Service were seen evacuating the corpses and taking casualties to hospital for treatment.
A five-year-old girl was also swept away by the flood along the water-logged Atimbo-Akpabuyo Road into a ravine and was also buried underneath concrete slabs which had fallen from a cut-off culvert into the gully. As at the time of filing this report, the body was yet to be found.
